The UK is closely monitoring a Russian spy ship near the coast of Scotland, which is likely gathering information on underwater infrastructure.

According to SkyNews on November 19, the announcemnt was made by UK Defense Minister John Healey,

Healey said that a Russian ship, suspected of collecting data on underwater infrastructure, is currently near the coast of Scotland, and British authorities are keeping a close watch on it.

“A Russian spy ship, the Yantar, is on the edge of UK waters north of Scotland,” said Healey, adding that the vessel entered the area several weeks ago.

Healey explained that the ship is intended for intelligence gathering and mapping underwater cables. He also mentioned that the UK had deployed a Royal Navy frigate and Royal Air Force planes to monitor the ship's movements, during which the Yantar had directed lasers at British pilots.

Defense Minister stated that these Russian actions are extremely dangerous and noted that this is the second time this year the Yantar has entered British waters.

“So my message to Russia and to Putin is this: we see you, we know what you're doing, and if the Yantar travels south this week, we are ready. We will not tolerate a threat to the British people's essential connections underwater,” the minister added.

Earlier, Russian intelligence-gathering vessel was observed near US territorial waters off the Hawaiian island of Oahu, with the US Coast Guard monitoring its activities.

The Russian Navy's Kareliya, a Vishnya-class intelligence ship, was detected operating roughly 15 nautical miles south of Oahu on October 29, outside the 12-nautical-mile zone that marks US territorial waters.
