Russia Expands Propaganda Push in Africa With Broadcasts in Six Languages

Russia is intensifying its media influence across the African continent, broadcasting Kremlin narratives in more than 40 countries in six languages, Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) reported on July 13.
Since June 2025, Russian state outlets have added Portuguese services targeting Angola and Mozambique, with Amharic broadcasts for Ethiopia planned by year’s end.
According to HUR spokesman Andrii Yusov, “Russian propaganda is a global-level threat functioning to achieve one goal – the territorial, resource, and cultural expansion of the aggressor,” underscoring Moscow’s strategic use of TASS and the RT television network to project influence across Africa.

RT’s footprint on the continent has doubled in two years: the number of African partner channels rose from 30 to 60, while in 2024 over 1,000 local journalists completed training under Russian standards. Since June 2025, RT has also launched in-person workshops in Addis Ababa, with plans to extend similar programs throughout Africa under FSB supervision.
Parallel to RT’s expansion, TASS is recruiting correspondents and establishing bureaus in Ethiopia, Senegal, Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and beyond.
Earlier, it was reported about an operation in which Russian actors assumed the identities of deceased Africans to create phantom journalists and experts, publishing hundreds of pro-Kremlin articles across West and Central Africa.
