Russia is attempting to interfere in the upcoming US elections by using AI-generated content for disinformation campaigns, according to a Reuters report on September 24, citing an official from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The official noted that Russia is producing the largest amount of AI content but did not specify the exact volume.

In addition to AI content, Russia is engaged in broader disinformation efforts, including staging videos, such as one in which a woman falsely claimed to be a victim of a hit-and-run accident involving presidential candidate Kamala Harris, the official added.

The content produced by the Kremlin aligns with Russia’s ongoing efforts to support former President Trump’s candidacy while discrediting Vice President Harris and the Democratic Party, often through conspiratorial narratives, the official said.

The Russian embassy declined to comment on the matter and in the past denied interfering in US elections.

Meanwhile, US intelligence does not currently see Chinese AI content aimed at influencing the November 5 elections. However, Russia’s close ally Iran has adopted similar tactics, using AI to generate social media content and produce “inauthentic news articles” for websites posing as legitimate news sources, according to the ODNI official.

The Iranian embassy in the US also declined to comment and has previously rejected any claims of involvement in US election interference.

Earlier, it was reported that Russia is conducting disinformation campaigns targeting Poland’s flooding.
