Russia is preparing strikes on critical nuclear energy infrastructure in Ukraine ahead of the winter season, raising concerns about potential global repercussions. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha shared this information, citing intelligence reports and warning of the severe risks associated with these actions.

According to Sybiha, the potential strikes could target open switchgear at nuclear power plants and transmission substations. These components are essential for the safe operation of Ukraine’s nuclear energy systems. Damage to these facilities could lead to a serious nuclear incident, with consequences extending far beyond Ukraine. Ukrainian intelligence has already shared this information with international partners, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has also been informed.

Sybiha emphasized that Russia remains the only country to have seized a nuclear power plant in Europe, specifically referring to the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant since February 2022. He added that Russia has continued to endanger the facility through improper operation and the storage of military equipment and personnel on-site.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to its Peace Formula, which includes ensuring nuclear and radiation safety. He called on international organizations and UN member states to prevent further escalations and to address Russia’s actions. Sybiha also thanked the IAEA for its decision to expand its missions across Ukraine’s energy facilities and urged for rapid implementation of these agreements.

In recent months, the threat to Ukraine’s nuclear facilities has intensified. In addition to the ongoing risks posed by the occupation of Zaporizhzhia, Russian attacks have also endangered other nuclear plants. Drones, for example, have been reported flying dangerously close to the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant.
