Russia Seeks Leverage in Iran Nuclear Talks by Offering Uranium Deal

Moscow has reiterated its offer to assist in handling Iran’s enriched uranium reserves, proposing to take excess material for processing in Russia and return it in a form suitable for peaceful energy use.
The proposal, originally part of the 2015 nuclear deal, remains on the table should Tehran and other involved parties express interest, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on July 7.
“Russia has proposed taking excess enriched uranium from Iran for further processing and dilution, making it suitable for use at nuclear power plants,” Lavrov told reporters. “We are ready to offer these services again if the sides deem it helpful.”

He recalled that Russian leader Vladimir Putin had previously emphasized Moscow’s technical capabilities during the negotiation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
“When the JCPOA was agreed upon, it considered Russia’s ability to provide uranium dilution services to Iran,” Lavrov said.
Lavrov also indicated that Russia is open to playing a diplomatic role in the talks between the US and Iran, as efforts to revive the nuclear agreement continue.
“If the parties are comfortable with Russia helping bridge positions—now that the US is looking to resume dialogue, with support from Oman and other Gulf states—we are ready to step in. But of course, it depends on whether Tehran, as the main stakeholder, wants this.”
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov has claimed that Hungary and Russia share a “common problem” concerning the treatment of their ethnic minorities in Ukraine and suggested joint efforts to address it.
