Russia Sees the Highest Losses in Ukraine Since 2022, With 1,271 Casualties Daily
In September 2024, Russia faced record-high casualties in Ukraine, with an average of 1,271 troops killed or wounded daily, according to a British intelligence report on October 7.
This number surpasses the previous peak recorded in May 2024, when daily losses reached 1,262 personnel. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia’s total casualties are estimated to have exceeded 648,000.
British intelligence attributes this increase in losses to the widening scope of combat operations, including battles in Kharkiv and Kursk regions, along with intensified fighting across the frontline. Russian forces continue to stretch Ukraine’s defenses, leveraging their numerical advantage in attempts to break through and secure tactical gains.
During the winter months, when combat conditions are typically more challenging, Russian casualties are expected to remain high, averaging around 1,000 per day. Winter weather has not reduced the loss rate, as Russia continues to rely on heavy assaults rather than maneuver warfare, which requires more favorable conditions.
Earlier, ISW reported that Russia lost more than 1 tank division and 4 to 5 mechanized infantry divisions worth of equipment assaulting near Pokrovsk, Donetsk region.
