A large fire broke out overnight at the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka oil refinery in southern Russia following a drone attack on the facility, according to Russian outlet Astra on November 6.

The refinery, one of Russia’s largest, is located in the Krasnoarmeysky district of Volgograd. Residents reported explosions, anti-air fire, and a column of smoke rising from the refinery complex. Videos posted on social media appeared to show flames burning across part of the facility.

Volgograd Governor Andrey Bocharov confirmed that a fire had broken out in the area of the refinery, describing what he called a “massive drone attack” on the region overnight that was repelled by Russian air defenses.

“As a result of falling debris, a fire broke out in the industrial zone of the Krasnoarmeysky district. Fire services immediately began extinguishing it. Emergency response specialists and local authorities are working to assess the damage and eliminate the consequences,” Bocharov said on Telegram.

The Lukoil-Volgograd refinery sits exactly within the area mentioned by Bocharov.

This is not the first time the facility has come under attack.

Ukrainian Special Operations Forces (SSO) previously struck the refinery on September 18, 2025, temporarily halting its operations.

Open-source data show that before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka had an annual processing capacity of 15.7 million tons of crude oil, accounting for roughly 5.6% of all oil refining in Russia.

Earlier, fuel exports from Russia’s Black Sea port of Tuapse were suspended after a Ukrainian drone strike damaged port infrastructure, forcing the local refinery to halt operations.
