Russian military commanders are investigating suspected deliberate sabotage by their own personnel after a series of unexplained equipment failures crippled river boats operating in the Kherson region, according to the Ukrainian partisan movement Atesh, which reported the developments on Telegram on January 8.

Atesh agents embedded among servicemembers of Russia’s 92nd River Boat Brigade say the situation inside the unit has reached a critical point. The brigade is part of the reconstituted Dnipro River Flotilla and falls under the command of the Black Sea Fleet.

According to the partisan group, mechanical failures appear to occur precisely when the vessels are most urgently needed for operations on the Dnipro River.

“Russian counterintelligence no longer believes this is ordinary wear and tear and is frantically searching for those who help engines ‘fall asleep’ and wiring ‘spontaneously ignite,’” Atesh said.

Commanders reportedly suspect that crews are intentionally disabling their own boats to avoid becoming targets for Ukrainian Defense Forces operating along the river.

ATESH agents acknowledged that they are primarily observing the situation, though they admit to occasionally pointing out where equipment is most vulnerable.

“What the occupiers consider sabotage driven by fear, we call professional preparation for a ‘long-term repair,’” the group said.

Atesh added that Russia’s Dnipro River Flotilla is steadily transforming into what it described as “a flotilla of immobile objects,” underscoring what the movement portrays as deepening demoralization and dysfunction within Russian river units.

Earlier, reports emerged that Russian officers deployed on the Pokrovsk axis are increasingly attempting to leave frontline positions, submitting formal requests for reassignment to rear-area posts or quieter sectors.
