Russian Drone Strike Hits Welt Reporting Team, Killing One Ukrainian Soldier

A Welt reporting team came under Russian drone attack while filming with a Ukrainian air-defense unit in eastern Ukraine, journalist Ibrahim Naber wrote on Facebook on October 28.
The strike, carried out by a Russian Lancet drone roughly 25–30 kilometers behind the front line, killed one Ukrainian soldier, Konstantin, and seriously injured another.
Naber’s producer, Ivan, underwent surgery following the attack, while cameraman Viktor Lysenko and Naber sustained minor injuries.

The team had been conducting an interview with the three soldiers moments before the drone hit. Naber said they were clearly marked as journalists at the time of filming.
Footage of the explosion and its aftermath, captured by Lysenko, has since been published as part of Welt’s reporting documenting the attack.
In a personal appeal, Naber also launched a fundraiser for Ihor, the soldier who lost a leg in the strike. “We interviewed him less than 30 minutes before the explosion,” Naber wrote, adding that he contributed $1,162 to the campaign.
The journalist thanked his newsroom and security team for their swift response and support in the hours following the attack.
Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during an October 23 press conference in Brussels that Russia has killed 135 media workers since its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
