Two Ukrainian journalists from FreeDom media outlet were killed, and another was wounded when a Russian Lancet drone struck their car at a gas station in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region, according to a media report on October 23.

Reporter Aliona Hramova (Hubanova) and cameraman Yevhen Karmazin, both working for Ukraine’s international broadcaster FreeDom, died at the scene.

Their colleague, correspondent Oleksandr Kolychev, sustained shrapnel injuries and multiple fractures and was taken to a hospital for treatment, the network said.

According to FreeDom, the crew had been documenting the aftermath of an earlier Russian strike when their vehicle was hit.

“Aliona Hramova constantly worked in the hottest zones of Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions, showing the world the truth about how Russian troops are destroying her native Donetsk region,” the channel said in a statement.

Hramova, originally from Yenakiieve, was trained as a finance specialist but turned to journalism after Russia launched its war against Ukraine. She had served as a war correspondent for Ukraine’s public broadcasting service since 2021 and was awarded the Order of Princess Olga (III Class) in June 2023. She was 43.

Karmazin, a native of Kramatorsk, had joined the network in 2022 and was 33 years old.

Vadym Filashkin, head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, confirmed that the journalists’ car was hit by a Lancet loitering munition.

“My sincere condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues,” he wrote on Telegram.

Ukraine’s National Police said the journalists had been filming evidence of earlier shelling in Kramatorsk at the time of the drone strike. Law enforcement officers are now documenting the aftermath of the attack.

Earlier, reports emerged that Ukrainian journalist Anastasiia Hlukhivska, who was detained by Russian security forces in August 2023 in occupied Melitopol, has been held in Russian custody for more than two years without any formal charges.
