Russian Drone Strike in Sumy Injures 12 Civilians, Damages Infrastructure

A Russian drone strike targeted a civilian area in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, injuring at least 12 people and causing significant damage to vehicles and residential buildings, local officials reported on October 21.

According to Oleg Hryhorov, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, a Russian attack drone deliberately struck a major intersection in the city.

“The enemy’s combat UAV struck directly at the intersection. Several vehicles and elements of civilian infrastructure were damaged. All those injured are receiving necessary medical care,” Hryhorov stated.

A correspondent from Suspilne confirmed that the drone hit the roadway. Emergency responders are currently operating at the site, where power lines were also damaged in the blast.

Sumy Mayor Artem Kobzar later clarified that the attack occurred around 4:30 p.m. and involved a Russian drone of the Italmas type.

“More than 10 vehicles were damaged in the explosion, and windows in nearby apartment buildings were blown out by the blast wave. So far, we know of nine people injured,” Kobzar said. “A mobile assistance center will begin operating at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow for all those in need of support.”

Ukrainian emergency services (DSNS) reported that the drone strike affected at least three multi-story residential buildings and confirmed the number of injured had risen to 12 based on preliminary assessments.

Earlier, a massive Russian drone attack struck the Ukrainian town of Novhorod-Siverskyi, with approximately 20 Shahed drones hitting the area.
