Trump–Putin Summit Plans in Budapest Put on Hold, White House Confirms—NBC News

The United States and Russia have reportedly paused preparations for a planned summit between President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Budapest, according to NBC News correspondent Garrett Haake on October 21.
A senior White House official told Haake that planning for the high-level meeting had been “put on hold.”
The official added that while the recent phone call between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on October 20 was described as “productive,” President Trump believes both sides are not yet ready to move forward with the talks.
According to NBC News, the Budapest summit was initially agreed upon during a phone conversation between Trump and Putin on October 16.

At that time, Trump indicated that delegations from both countries—led by Rubio and Lavrov—would meet this week to discuss the next steps.
The White House has not specified when or whether preparations might resume. The decision to pause reportedly reflects Trump’s assessment that “additional groundwork” is needed before the two leaders meet in person.
The planned summit was expected to focus on security and regional stability issues.
Earlier, on October 16, President Donald Trump announced that he and Russian leader Vladimir Putin had agreed to send top advisors—led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov—to prepare for a potential summit in Budapest aimed at discussing the war in Ukraine.
