Trump and Putin Agree to High-Level Talks, Eye Budapest Summit on Ukraine War

President Donald Trump said on October 16, 2025, that he and Russian leader Vladimir Putin agreed to send high-level advisors to preliminary meetings next week, led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, ahead of a planned summit between the two leaders in Budapest, Hungary.

“At the conclusion of the call, we agreed that there will be a meeting of our High Level Advisors, next week… Putin and I will then meet in an agreed upon location, Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can bring this ‘inglorious’ War, between Russia and Ukraine, to an end,” Trump noted.

Trump described the telephone conversation as “very productive,” noting that the discussion also touched on recent developments in the Middle East, U.S-Russia trade, and First Lady Melania Trump’s work with children:

“Putin congratulated me and the United States on the Great Accomplishment of Peace in the Middle East, something that, he said, has been dreamed of for centuries… Putin thanked the First Lady, Melania, for her involvement with children. He was very appreciative, and said that this will continue,” Trump stated.

The president also expressed hope that progress in the Middle East could help advance negotiations to end the war in Ukraine:

“I actually believe that the Success in the Middle East will help in our negotiation in attaining an end to the War with Russia/Ukraine,” he added.

Trump confirmed that he would meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on October 17 to discuss the conversation with Putin and other related matters.

Following the call, Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov said that the Russian leader told Trump that supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles “would not change the battlefield situation” and would undermine US-Russia relations and efforts to resolve the war.

Earlier, Trump stated that the US has “a lot of Tomahawks” and warned that Russia’s economy is “going to collapse.”
