Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa proposed that Russia redeploy military police along Syria’s frontier with Israel as part of broader negotiations over the status of Russian bases in the country during his first official visit to Moscow, The Moscow Times reported on October 15.

In remarks released during the visit, Sharaa said Damascus would honor existing accords with Moscow. “We respect all signed agreements and are working to update our relations,” he stated at the Kremlin. Russian leader Vladimir Putin said Moscow was ready to “implement many interesting and useful initiatives.”

Sharaa’s delegation additionally sought economic commitments, including concessional grain supplies and participation in energy, rail and reconstruction projects. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak signaled Moscow’s readiness to engage in oil and infrastructure recovery efforts, according to a Reuters account of the talks

Both sides avoided a joint press conference. Regional media and analysts noted that the southern Syria proposal would echo earlier Russian military police deployments that helped manage the Syria-Israel disengagement regime.

Earlier, it was reported that Syria’s new president Ahmed al-Sharaa traveled to Moscow to discuss the continued operation of Russia’s bases at Tartus and Hmeimim along with other security issues.
