Russia Launches Largest Iskander-M Missile Strike of 2025 in Overnight Attack on Ukraine

Russia fired a record number of Iskander-M ballistic missiles at Ukraine this year in an overnight assault on October 16, The Insider reported, citing data from Ukraine’s Air Force.

The previous record for a single Iskander-M attack was 14 missiles, recorded on both May 24 and October 10, according to the outlet.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched a large-scale overnight attack targeting the country’s energy infrastructure, using a total of 357 aerial weapons. The assault included 320 strike drones and 37 missiles, 28 of which were ballistic. The heaviest strikes were directed at Poltava and Kharkiv regions.

The missile barrage included 26 Iskander-M (KN-23) ballistic missiles launched from occupied Crimea as well as Russia’s Kursk and Voronezh regions. In addition, Russia used two Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, two Iskander-K cruise missiles, and seven Kh-59 guided air-to-surface missiles.

Air defense units managed to intercept or disable 288 aerial threats, including 283 drones and five Kh-59 missiles. The military confirmed direct hits in 14 populated areas, with additional damage from falling debris in two more locations. An additional 18 missiles were reportedly lost from radar tracking

Earlier, Earlier, Ukrainian air defenses intercepted a Russian Iskander-K cruise missile targeting the Sumy region.

A Buk-M1 air-defense system engaged and destroyed the missile before it could reach populated areas. Video footage released by the military captures the launch and the mid-air interception.
