Ukrainian air defenses shot down a Russian cruise missile headed for the Sumy region, according to the Ukrainian Air Force on October 12.

Air Force said the incoming Iskander-K cruise missile was intercepted and destroyed by a Buk-M1 air-defense unit. Accompanying footage shows a Buk launch and the missile being struck before it reached populated areas.

“Our warriors once again proved professionalism, composure, and coordinated work are the strongest weapons. During one of the mass missile-air strikes on the Sumy direction, the Buk-M1 crew of the anti-aircraft missile regiment named after the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen hit and destroyed the Iskander-K cruise missile,” the Air Force wrote in a statement accompanying the footage.

The Buk-M1 is a medium-range surface-to-air missile system capable of engaging multiple aerial targets at ranges up to about 35 kilometers and altitudes from roughly 15 meters to 22 kilometers.

The Iskander-K variant carries the R-500 cruise missile, which has an estimated range of around 500 kilometers and a warhead mass near 480 kilograms. Cruise missiles of this type typically fly low—several meters above ground during their terminal run—and use terrain-following navigation to limit detection.

Earlier, Ukrainian air defense units successfully shot down one of Russia’s newest Kh-69 cruise missiles using a low-cost laser-guided APKWS interceptor.
