Ukraine’s First Jet Interceptor Enters Service—What Russian Drones Will It Destroy?

Ukraine’s Defense Forces have added the Alexa Spatium, the country’s first domestically developed jet-powered drone interceptor, to their arsenal, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense announced on August 21.
The Alexa Spatium is a high-speed jet-powered unmanned aircraft developed by Ukrainian engineers specifically to destroy small aerial, ground, and surface targets under combat conditions.

According to the ministry, the interceptor is primarily designed to engage Russian strike drones, including the Geran-3, Geran-4, Geran-5, and Shahed-131. It can also be used against reconnaissance drones, helicopters, and other individual targets.
The interceptor is powered by a turbojet engine and is designed to operate across low- and medium-altitude flight levels. It combines a high flight ceiling and significant combat radius with high maneuverability and a broad speed range, allowing it to reduce speed when necessary to conserve fuel.
The drone can operate either using pre-programmed coordinates or under direct guidance. It is also equipped with television and infrared search and targeting systems, as well as control and video transmission systems, the ministry reported.

Depending on the mission, the Alexa Spatium can carry different types of warheads, including high-explosive fragmentation, shaped-charge, and thermobaric variants.
Measuring approximately 1.5 by 1.7 meters, the interceptor can be launched from a mobile catapult within several minutes. Its airframe is made from lightweight, durable composite materials, allowing it to perform sharp maneuvers while maintaining control.
The ministry said the entire system is sufficiently compact to fit into a pickup truck, requires minimal preparation of a launch position, and features a modular design and automated processes.

Another feature of the Alexa Spatium is its potential reusability. If the drone does not engage its intended target during a mission, it can return to its launch area and be deployed again.
According to the Defense Ministry, the interceptor was developed with an emphasis on rapid response, mobility, resistance to challenging operating conditions, and minimal requirements for preparing deployment positions.
The addition of the Alexa Spatium comes as Ukraine continues to expand and upgrade its domestically developed unmanned systems. The Ukrainian Plastun unmanned ground vehicle recently received an upgrade that doubled its maximum payload capacity from 50 to 100 kilograms.
Trident Tech, the system’s developer, disclosed the improvements to Militarnyi on August 18. The 35-kilogram robotic platform has been in service with Ukraine’s Defense Forces since 2023.
