According to Reuters on September 6, a White House official described the meeting as “substantive” and said further information on the next steps would be announced in the coming weeks. Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov separately characterized the talks as “substantive, constructive, and extremely frank.”

The meeting lasted three hours and 10 minutes and focused primarily on possible approaches to ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.

During the meeting, Witkoff told Putin, “When we retire, we’ll have all these incredible stories and memories, and yours will be right at the top of it all.”

Ushakov said the US delegation arrived with a number of proposals concerning a potential settlement and that Witkoff and Kushner would take Moscow’s position into account during their subsequent contacts in Kyiv.

“The US representatives seriously prepared for the trip to Moscow, they formulated a whole range of considerations regarding ways of settlement,” Ushakov said. He also said contacts between Trump and Putin would continue alongside diplomatic work involving Witkoff and Kushner.

“Putin and Trump will maintain personal contacts, and work through Witkoff and Kushner will also continue,” Ushakov said. The discussions extended beyond Ukraine, according to Ushakov, and included potential large-scale US-Russian economic projects.

After leaving Moscow, the aircraft carrying Witkoff and Kushner landed in Rzeszów, Poland. The US envoys are expected to travel to Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian officials on September 6.

Their Moscow visit took place amid a temporary arrangement concerning strikes on cities involved in the diplomatic process. On September 5, the Kremlin said Putin had ordered Russian forces not to strike Kyiv for three days beginning at midnight.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following contacts with the US representatives, said Ukraine was also prepared to observe a temporary halt to aerial strikes involving cities connected to the negotiations.
