Russia Strikes Kyiv Airports Ahead of Scheduled US Delegation Arrival

Russia deliberately targeted airports in Kyiv and Boryspil overnight on September 5, in what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said may have been a response to preparations for a possible US delegation to arrive in Ukraine by air.

Zelenskyy said the strikes marked the first deliberate Russian attacks on the two airports in a long time and linked them to discussions about allowing US representatives to fly directly into Ukraine.
NEW: Russia hit near both Kyiv airports as Witkoff and Kushner were reportedly about to fly in from Moscow.

“Obviously, such Russian strikes on airports are a reaction to discussions and preparations for the possibility of the American side using an aircraft to arrive in Ukraine and land at either Kyiv Airport or Boryspil Airport,” Zelenskyy said.
The Ukrainian president said Russia used Shahed-type attack drones in the strikes, describing the attack as a response to US diplomatic efforts.
Zelenskyy also said Ukraine would adjust its operation concerning Russian airspace next week, citing the risks created by drones and missiles operating over Russia. He did not provide further details on what the changes would involve.
According to Zelenskyy, the US representatives are expected to travel to Moscow and subsequently to Kyiv. Ukraine has said it is prepared to provide the necessary conditions for diplomatic travel and expects Russia to refrain from air attacks during the same period.

“Of course, there are no threats to diplomacy from our side and there will not be any. Ukraine is interested in bringing peace closer. Russia will be held accountable for what it does,” Zelenskyy said.
The overnight Russian attack also struck other locations across Ukraine. Zelenskyy said four people were killed and five wounded after a civilian enterprise was hit in Kamianske, Dnipropetrovsk region. Residential buildings were damaged in Kherson, Boryspil, and the Kharkiv region, while Russian drones targeted shopping centers in Sumy and Mykolaiv.
The airport strikes came as preparations continue for potential visits by representatives of US President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy said on September 4 that Ukraine would suspend aerial strikes against Russia for the period necessary to ensure the safe travel of Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.
