Illegal Starlink terminals are enhancing the effectiveness of Russian forces in Ukraine by improving their coordination during assaults and increasing the accuracy of artillery strikes, according to The Washington Post.

Despite US sanctions aimed at preventing American technology from reaching Russia, a black market for Starlink terminals has emerged, allowing Russian commanders to access real-time battlefield data via drones. Ukrainian soldiers report that this has contributed significantly to recent Russian advances.

Starlink terminals have also been crucial for the Ukrainian military, enabling efficient communication and operational effectiveness. However, some Ukrainian soldiers have expressed frustration towards Elon Musk and SpaceX for not sufficiently addressing the illegal use of their technology by Russian forces.

Ukrainian military personnel noted that access to reliable high-speed internet has transformed operations, allowing for quicker communication and coordination. The presence of Starlink has reportedly improved Russian operational capabilities, raising concerns among Ukrainian officials.

US and Ukrainian governments are working with SpaceX to prevent the unauthorized use of Starlink by Russian forces. However, analysts suggest that enforcing these measures is challenging, particularly given the success of Russian forces in circumventing sanctions.

While unauthorized sales of Starlink terminals to Russian forces are illegal, a gray market exists, fueled by demand. Some Russian websites offer these terminals for military use, with prices starting at over $1,000. Users require foreign phone numbers and emails for activation, complicating the procurement process.
