Two 19-year-olds were allegedly recruited by Russian intelligence to plant a bomb at a police station in Rivne, West of Ukraine, without knowing they were also meant to be killed in the explosion, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported on February 3.

According to the SBU, the suspects were detained while attempting to place the device, “At the time of planting the explosives, the occupants planned to detonate it by calling a mobile phone that was connected to the SVP.” the agency said in a statement on Monday.

The two individuals were reportedly recruited through Telegram  by an unspecified Russian intelligence branch, lured by promises of quick money. They were instructed to retrieve the IED from a concealed location and plant it near a law enforcement building in central Rivne.

Recently, an explosion near a military enlistment office in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Khmelnytskyi Oblast, on Feb. 5 killed one and injured four, Suspilne reported. Investigators are working at the scene.

The blast follows recent attacks on draft offices in Rivne and Pavlohrad and the Jan. 31 killing of a draft officer in Poltava Oblast. Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi called for a full investigation.
