Russia Attacks Ukraine With Nearly 1,500 Drones in Four Days, Including 800 Jet-Powered UAVs

Russia has launched nearly 1,500 drones of various types against Ukraine over the past four days, including around 800 jet-powered UAVs, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his evening address on August 30.

According to Zelenskyy, Russia’s current aerial attack tactics are aimed at exhausting Ukraine and its population through sustained waves of drone strikes.
“Our warriors shoot down a significant share of them. There were almost 1,500 drones of all types in these four days alone—around 800 of them jet-powered. The most difficult task is intercepting the jet-powered ones. Now, it is mainly our combat aircraft that protect against them,” the president stated.
Ukraine currently relies primarily on combat aircraft to counter such drones, according to Zelenskyy. At the same time, the country is working to expand the use of specialized interceptor drones as a less resource-intensive means of combating Russian UAVs.
Four Ukrainian companies have already developed interceptor systems designed for the task, Zelenskyy said, adding that one of the designs is currently demonstrating the strongest results.
The president called on Ukraine’s Defense Ministry and the military to expand the country’s capabilities as quickly as possible to intercept all types of Russian drones.
Zelenskyy also set a target for Ukraine’s air defenses to achieve an interception rate of more than 90% against Russian drones this fall, as Moscow continues to intensify its use of unmanned systems in attacks across the country.
The scale of the threat was evident during another large-scale Russian aerial assault on August 29, when Moscow combined ballistic and anti-ship missiles with waves of attack drones, including jet-powered UAVs.
During the overnight attack, Russian forces launched an Oniks anti-ship missile, an Iskander-M ballistic missile, and 267 attack drones across Ukraine.
