Russian Missile Hits Ukrainian Military Training Base, Killing At Least 12 Soldiers, Injuring Dozens

A Russian missile struck a training unit of Ukraine’s Ground Forces, killing at least 12 soldiers and injuring more than 60, according to Ukrainian Armed Forces on June 1.
In a statement released by Ukraine’s Ground Forces Command, officials confirmed the strike targeted a location used by one of the military’s training units. A commission has been formed to investigate the circumstances of the attack, and a formal judicial inquiry has been launched.
“Unfortunately, there are casualties and injured service members,” the statement read.
“We emphasize that no formations or mass gatherings of personnel were being conducted. After the air raid siren was announced, most of the personnel were in shelters.”
The military also stated that affected soldiers are receiving full medical assistance.
Commanders from the Operational Command “East” will work closely with law enforcement to support the investigation. The Ground Forces emphasized that if any official negligence or misconduct contributed to the casualties, those responsible will face strict accountability.
“If it is established that the death and injury of personnel resulted from the actions or inaction of responsible officials, those individuals will be held fully accountable,” the statement added.
In response to the strike, Ukrainian forces are enacting additional safety measures to protect troops stationed in rear areas, which have increasingly come under threat from Russian missile and drone attacks.
“Additional security measures are being taken to preserve the lives and health of service members under ongoing missile and air strikes in rear regions,” officials said.
Earlier, a Russian missile strike hit a military firing range in the Sumy region, killing six Ukrainian service members and wounding at least ten more.
