Russian Ship Carrying Weapons from Syria Breaks Down Near the Portugese Coast
A Russian military cargo ship, Sparta, sent to retrieve military equipment and weaponry from Syria, broke down while en route, the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine (HUR) reported on December 23.
The vessel suffered a malfunction in its main engine’s fuel pipe, leaving the crew adrift in open waters near Portugal as they attempted repairs.
Russia’s remaining military forces in Syria have consolidated into two primary bases: the Khmeimim Air Base and the Tartus Naval Base, following withdrawals from remote regions.
Additionally, some of the equipment and weaponry previously stationed in Tartus has reportedly been redirected by sea to Libya.
Russian military personnel in Syria are also reportedly discussing a possible directive from Syria’s new leadership, demanding the complete withdrawal of Russian forces from its territory, including the Khmeimim and Tartus bases, by February 20, 2025.
Earlier, a successful evacuation operation was carried out by HUR and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, resulting in the safe return of 34 individuals from Syria. Among those evacuated were 31 Ukrainian citizens and 3 Syrian nationals.
