A Russian Su-25 fighter jet  crashed during a routine training flight in the Primorsky region, according to Interfax, citing Russia’s Ministry of Defense, on March 24.

According to the ministry, the aircraft was not carrying any weapons and went down in an unpopulated area, causing no damage on the ground.

“There is no threat to the pilot’s life or health,” the statement added.

Preliminary reports suggest the crash was caused by a technical malfunction.

Su-25 "Frogfoot" — a Soviet-designed close air support jet, first flown in 1975. It’s built to destroy ground targets using rockets, bombs, guided missiles, and a 30mm cannon. The aircraft is heavily armored and can operate from unprepared runways. The estimated cost of one Su-25 ranges from $11 to $15 million (depending on upgrades and modifications). Before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, its air force had around 190 Su-25s in service, though losses have significantly reduced that number.
