On January 28, Russia reportedly lost a Su-34 fighter-bomber, an aircraft frequently used by its forces for launching guided aerial bomb attacks across Ukraine.

The update was shared on Telegram by Andriy Kovalenko, Head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), who confirmed that both jets were downed.

The Su-34, a modern fighter-bomber actively used by Russia for launching guided aerial bombs across Ukraine, was initially reported lost by Russian military bloggers Kirill Fyodorov and the pro-war Telegram channel Fighterbomber. According to preliminary reports, the jet may have been shot down over the Black Sea, although these claims remain unverified.

The fate of the pilot and weapons systems officer remains uncertain. Early reports indicate that both crew members may have been killed in the incident.

The loss of the Su-34 comes amid continued Russian reliance on guided aerial bombs.

According to Militarnyi, in October 2025, Moscow significantly ramped up its use of these munitions in airstrikes targeting Ukrainian territory.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Security Service confirmed that its special forces unit “Alpha” conducted successful long-range drone strikes against five Russian military airbases in 2025, targeting and destroying 15 aircraft.
