Russian Su-57 Fighter Jet Lands in China for Airshow Debut
The Russian Su-57, a next-generation fighter jet, has arrived in China to participate in the Airshow China 2024, set to take place in Zhuhai. This marks the first time the Su-57 will be showcased outside of Russia, as previous displays have only occurred at Russian aviation events.
According to Zaobao, the Su-57 landed on November 3, 2024, and will be presented to both Chinese and international audiences during the exhibition. Additionally, there may be discussions around potential export agreements, as certain countries in the Middle East and Asia have shown interest in the Su-57.
The aircraft displayed is marked with the serial number “054,” a modernized prototype originally used for test flights. It has since been upgraded to the production model Su-57. Russian sources report that pilot Sergei Bogdan, a test pilot for Sukhoi Design Bureau, is likely to pilot the aircraft during the show.
The Su-57’s presence at the event could signal Russia’s intent to strengthen defense industry ties with China. Despite China’s public stance against military cooperation with Russia, recent reports suggest collaboration on weapon components and equipment. Notably, China previously supplied Russia with Mi-17 navigation equipment, Su-35 components, and radar systems for the S-400 missile system.
While Russia describes the Su-57 as a fifth-generation fighter, analysts note it more closely resembles a generation 4++ aircraft. The Su-57, operational since 2022, reportedly uses Kh-59 missiles, which are too large for internal storage, indicating limitations in stealth capability compared to other fifth-generation models.
Russian defense media claim that Su-57 fighters are involved in strikes on Ukrainian targets from bases within Russia, including the Lipetsk airfield. Reports have indicated that Ukraine recently struck two Su-57s stationed at the Akhtubinsk airbase in Astrakhan, possibly using drones.
