Zelenskyy: Ukraine and US Close to Breakthrough Security Agreement After Paris Talks

Ukraine is ready to finalize at the highest level a bilateral document on security guarantees with the US president following talks in France, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a statement on January 8.
Zelenskyy stated that Rustem Umerov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, briefed him on the results of the Ukrainian team’s discussions in France the previous day.
He added that Ukraine was continuing to coordinate work between European and US teams.

He said the sides also discussed documents related to Ukraine’s recovery and economic development, as well as difficult issues tied to a basic framework for ending the war, with Ukraine presenting possible options for finalizing that framework.
He mentioned that Ukraine would brief partners after its negotiating team returned to Kyiv, and said Russian strikes did not indicate Moscow had changed its priorities.
Zelenskyy said pressure on Russia needed to increase alongside the work of negotiating teams, and that the credibility of future security guarantees should be demonstrated by partners’ ability to apply effective pressure at this stage, adding that Ukraine was preparing new contacts with partners.

Zelenskyy said the US side would communicate with Russia and that Ukraine expected feedback on whether Russia was prepared to end the war.
Earlier, it was reported that Zelenskyy tied any election timeline to security guarantees, including bilateral guarantees with the US, and said US officials were negotiating with Russia while Ukraine expects stronger pressure tools to be used.
