Russian troops executed two unarmed Ukrainian prisoners of war after capturing them near the village of Udachne in the Pokrovsk direction of the Donetsk region, according to a statement released by the Prosecutor’s Office of Donetsk region on May 23.

According to the authorities, the incident took place during a morning assault by Russian forces on positions held by Ukraine’s forces in the area.

Four Ukrainian soldiers were carrying out combat duties at the time. Two of them were taken prisoner and later shot in a wooded area. The fate of the other two remains unknown.

“The deliberate killing of prisoners of war constitutes a grave breach of the Geneva Conventions and is classified as a serious international crime, ‘ the prosecutor’s office stated.

On April 30, a released investigation suggested Russian authorities have set up a vast network of at least 29 prisons where Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war are subjected to systematic torture.
