Russia’s Chemical Warfare in Ukraine Escalates, EU’s Kaja Kallas Confirms

Russia is ramping up its use of chemical weapons in Ukraine — this is confirmed by intelligence from several countries.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas shared this with journalists in Brussels after the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, Ukrinform reported on July 15.
“Information about Russia’s use of chemical weapons in Ukraine comes from Dutch and German intelligence. And this use is increasing. These are actually open sources, since the Dutch Ministry of Defense has published this information,” Kallas said.

She also noted that it was a revelation to her that since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, “Russia has already used chemical weapons 9,000 times against Ukrainian forces.”
Kallas emphasized that the situation is serious, with intelligence reports indicating that Russia is increasing the frequency of such attacks. She stressed that this escalation is deeply concerning.
“Once again, this shows that Russia seeks to inflict as much pain and suffering as possible to force Ukraine to surrender,” the EU official concluded.
Earlier, it was reported that the European Union is preparing a new package of sanctions that, for the first time, will formally accuse Russia of using chemical weapons in its war against Ukraine.
A draft of the regulation points directly to Russia’s use of CS gas — commonly known as tear gas — as a weapon of war.
