Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia emphasized the necessity of a public consensus on the most critical issues facing Russia. He stated that anyone who disagrees with the proposed solutions should be considered a “traitor to the motherland” with all corresponding legal consequences, The Moscow Times reported, citing an interview conducted by Russian state media TASS on January 8.

“Some concepts are fundamental to the very existence of the state. There must be public consensus on these ideas,” Kirill said, according to TASS.

He highlighted the importance of this unity in addressing key security concerns, which he defined not only in terms of military aggression but also in terms of protecting Russia’s “moral and spiritual values,” largely shaped by the country’s traditional religions.

Kirill also portrayed Russia as a “spiritual opponent” to Western civilization, criticizing the West for what he described as justifications of sin. He argued that the West’s pursuit of personal freedom leads to moral decay, particularly among the younger generation, TASS wrote.

Moreover, the Patriarch expressed the view that the West has turned against Russia due to its potential to offer an attractive alternative model of civilization.

“We do not accept what is currently accepted in the West under the slogan of ‘human rights,’ but which is in fact aimed at destroying human morality, ‘ Patriarch said.

Kirill concluded by lamenting the absence of the concept of “heroism” in Western society, which he believes is necessary for the defense and strength of Russia. “A hero’s act is done for something greater than oneself.”

Previously, Russian leader Vladimir Putin marked the Orthodox Christmas holiday by drawing a comparison between Russian soldiers and Jesus Christ, calling their mission a “sacred” one.
