Security Guarantees for Ukraine Will Be Europe’s Responsibility, Says Trump’s Advisor Waltz

Mike Waltz, National Security Advisor to US President Donald Trump, stated that security guarantees for Ukraine would be the responsibility of Europe.
The advisor made this statement during a February 9 broadcast on NBC News.
“And I think an underlying principle here is that the Europeans have to own this conflict going forward. President Trump is going to end it. And then in terms of security guarantees, that is squarely going to be with the Europeans,“ Waltz said.
Waltz did not directly confirm or deny whether a phone call took place between Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, but he said that the future of Washington’s financial support for Ukraine, including the future of USAID in Ukraine, will be discussed during meetings in Europe this week.
“We need to recoup those costs,” Waltz stated. “And that is going to be a partnership with the Ukrainians, in terms of their rare earths, their natural resources, and their oil and gas, and also buying ours. Those conversations are going to happen this week.”
CBS News reported on February 9 that US Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the 61st Munich Security Conference that will take place from February 14 to 16, 2025 in Munich, Germany.
