Shield AI and Destinus Deploy Autonomous Flight System in Interceptor Drones Following Successful Tests

American firm Shield AI and European manufacturer Destinus announced the successful integration of the Hivemind autonomous flight system into Hornet interceptor drones.
Recent flight tests conducted in Spain confirmed that the AI software effectively manages the drone’s operations following a two-month integration process, according to Defense Express March 25.

The companies released a formal statement noting that the trials proved Hivemind can be quickly installed into Hornet platforms while "maintaining mission continuity without manual reprogramming."
The Vice President of Hivemind Solutions at Shield AI emphasized that autonomous solutions must be integrated into weaponry as rapidly as conditions change on the battlefield during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
During the testing phase, the Hornet drone used the Hivemind system to independently adjust its flight path in real time, updating its routes to meet changing mission requirements.

Future evaluations will focus on advanced mission planning, terrain-aware flight, and the coordinated operation of multiple platforms.
While the Hornet is primarily designed as an interceptor, it functions as a multi-purpose platform capable of reconnaissance and other battlefield tasks.
Both Shield AI and Destinus currently provide equipment to Ukraine. Destinus developed the Ruta cruise missile used by Ukrainian forces, and discussions regarding the delivery of Hornet interceptor drones have been ongoing since 2024.

Last year, the two companies established a strategic partnership to bring Hivemind AI to both the Rita cruise missile and the Hornet drone to "accelerate the delivery of AI-powered unmanned systems to Ukraine."
Earlier this year, an updated Ruta Block 2 cruise missile was introduced, featuring stealth capabilities, increased range, and the same Hivemind artificial intelligence.
Destinus officially unveiled the Ruta Block 2, a significantly upgraded version of the cruise missile already deployed by Ukrainian forces. This new variant featured an extended range of over 450 km and a larger warhead exceeding 250 kg.
The missile incorporated advanced stealth features and a multimode terminal navigation system powered by artificial intelligence.
Developed by the European aerospace company, the Ruta Block 2 represented a major evolution in precision strike capabilities, integrating Western technologies like the Hivemind combat AI from Shield AI to ensure effectiveness against electronic warfare.
