Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has suggested the possibility of halting energy supplies to Ukraine if Kyiv decides to stop the transit of Russian gas to Central Europe on December 27.

"After January 1, we will assess the situation and potential reciprocal measures against Ukraine," Fico stated in a video posted on Facebook. "If necessary, we will suspend electricity supplies that are critically needed by Ukraine during network outages."

The flow of Russian gas through Ukraine to Europe is set to stop at the end of the year when the current agreement expires, unless an alternative is reached.

On December 26, Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, during his visit to Russia, had offered Slovakia as a venue for negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.
