Switzerland Strengthens Ukraine’s Position in the Joint Communiqué to the Upcoming Summit
The final document for the upcoming Summit on Peace for Ukraine has been revised by Switzerland, incorporating changes that strengthen Ukraine’s position, according to a report by European Pravda.
Following the publication of the article on June 6, Kyiv issued a public statement asserting its commitment to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula.
Condemning Russian Aggression: The previous draft avoided explicitly calling out Russia’s actions. The new document now clearly identifies the war as “aggression by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.”
Protecting Ukrainian Territory: The earlier draft hinted at the possibility of Ukraine ceding territory for peace. The revised version stresses that lasting peace requires respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all nations.
Focus on Established Law: The initial draft presented a weakened “peace formula,” potentially opening the door for alternative proposals that didn’t fully align with international law. The revised document clarifies that only proposals adhering to international law and the UN Charter will be considered.
Neutral Language on Negotiations: While the document still promotes peace talks, it avoids directly mentioning Russia as a participant. Instead, it refers neutrally to “all parties” involved.
These revisions bring the document into closer alignment with Ukraine’s interests and established international law. They also establish a more robust foundation for potential future peace negotiations by condemning Russian aggression and outlining clear principles.
On June 15-16, the Summit on Peace for Ukraine will be held in Switzerland to support the rules established by the UN and maintain sustainable peace worldwide. The topics of the Summit will also include nuclear security, food security, and humanitarian issues.
