Ten Northern European nations have agreed to create plans for the potential cross-border evacuation of citizens in the event of war or other crises.

The Swedish Ministry of Defense announced that Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, and Germany signed an agreement to protect civilians in the Baltic Sea region and Scandinavian countries, according to European Pravda on March 5.

“The agreement provides the possibility to temporarily move people across borders in the event of a crisis or, in the worst case, war,” the statement said.

“The experience of Ukraine has shown that the temporary displacement of the population allows the defense of the country to continue while simultaneously protecting the civilian population,” the Swedish Ministry of Defense added.

The crisis plans developed by these countries will include specific details on how evacuated people will be housed and registered. They will also outline transport corridors for the mass movement of people and how assistance will be provided to vulnerable individuals.

Following the start of American-Israeli strikes on Iran, various European countries acted quickly to evacuate citizens stuck in the region. This occurred as Iranians began attacking several neighboring countries with missiles and drones.

Earlier, the Russian war against Ukraine upturned the world order, depreciated international law, and shifted many people’s views on what forms security should take to contain the spread of destruction and killings across the European continent.

The reverberations rippled globally, most notably in Africa and the Indo-Pacific, due to the allies Russia acquired to help export the war worldwide. Putin’s brutality and the grave threat it posed to basic values of life made many stop treating war as a faraway concept.
