A spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service stated that the decision to suspend the screenings of the controversial documentary 'Russians at War' was made by TIFF organizers "and was not influenced by any recommendation from Toronto Police," after TIFF has decided to pause upcoming screenings citing safety concerns.

Toronto Police also said that they are unaware of any active threats.

“We were aware of the potential for protests and had planned to have officers present to ensure public safety,” the spokesperson added.

In a statement issued on September 12, TIFF stated that it had become aware of “significant threats to festival operations and public safety,” leading to the “decision to halt screenings to ensure the safety of all festival guests, staff, and volunteers.”

The festival announced it will pause screenings scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday but remains committed to showing the film “when it is safe to do so,” emphasizing that organizers “believe this film deserves a place in our festival lineup.”

Previously on September 12, The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) stated that they "acknowledge and respect" concerns about the ‘Russians at War’ documentary, but will not cancel its premiere.
