Trump Delays New Sanctions on Russia, Citing Ukraine Peace Agreement Still Possible

US President Donald Trump said he is delaying the introduction of new sanctions against Russia, citing the possibility of a deal to end the war in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters at the G7 summit in Canada on June 16, Trump was asked whether the United States backs Europe’s call for more sanctions against Russia. He responded, “Well, Europe is saying that, but they haven’t done it yet.”
Pressed on why Washington does not impose sanctions on its own, Trump repeated, “Because I’m waiting to see whether or not a deal is signed.”
“Because I’m waiting to see whether or not a deal is signed,” Trump told reporters.

The US President noted that sanctions come at a significant cost to the United States.
“It’s not just, let’s sign a document. You’re talking about billions and billions of dollars. Sanctions are not that easy. It’s not just a one-way street,” Trump said.
Additionally, Trump has called for Russia to be readmitted to G7. He argued that the war in Ukraine would not have occurred if Moscow had remained a member.
On June 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia is engaging in talks with Ukraine solely to avoid new, tougher sanctions.
