Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich has lost his latest attempt to overturn European Union sanctions, Politico reported on September 10.
The EU imposed restrictions on the former Chelsea Football Club owner in 2022 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, citing his close ties to Russian leader Vladimir Putin and his role in generating revenue for the Russian government through steel group Evraz.

Abramovich had asked the EU’s top court to lift the sanctions, which include an asset freeze and a European travel ban, claiming they were unfair and seeking compensation for reputational damage.
On September 10, the General Court, part of the Court of Justice of the European Union, rejected his case, describing the measures as “necessary and appropriate,” Politico reported.
The billionaire has also faced legal challenges in the United Kingdom to clear his name, with limited success. Following the Russian invasion, Abramovich sold Chelsea FC for a record £2.5 billion.
Britain had previously threatened legal action against Russian businessman Roman Abramovich over £2.5 billion ($3.4 billion) in frozen proceeds from his sale of Chelsea Football Club, funds he intended for victims of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
