Turkey has deployed an advanced AWACS radar plane to Lithuania, boosting NATO’s surveillance in the Baltic after repeated Russian airspace violations, Bloomberg reported on September 24.

The aircraft, capable of detecting low-flying drones that ground systems can miss, will remain in Lithuania through September 25.

Estonia called emergency meetings at NATO and the UN Security Council after three Russian fighters entered its airspace on September 19, following previous drone incursions in Poland, Romania, and Lithuania, Bloomberg writes.

Other NATO responses include Italy extending its anti-aircraft deployment in Estonia and Sweden and Poland launching the Gotland Sentry exercise to protect the strategic Baltic island.

Military analysts say Russia’s incursions serve as symbolic challenges to NATO and a reminder that Moscow does not recognize the sovereignty of former Soviet states in the region, according to Bloomberg.

Previously, it was reported that US President Donald Trump believes NATO countries should shoot down Russian military aircraft if they enter their airspace.
