UK Foreign Minister David Lammy delivered a strong statement at the United Nations Security Council, describing Russia’s war in Ukraine as an act of imperialism. Lammy emphasized the global stakes of allowing Russia to redraw borders by force, framing the war as a direct challenge to international law and stability.

Mr. President, I speak not only as a Briton, as a Londoner, and as a Foreign Secretary, but I say to the Russian representative on his phone as I speak that I stand here also as a Black man whose ancestors were taken in chains from Africa at the barrel of a gun to be enslaved, whose ancestors rose up and fought in a great rebellion of the enslaved. I know imperialism when I see it, and I will call it out for what it is,” Lammy said.

He linked the historical context of imperialism and oppression to Russia’s actions in Ukraine, arguing that such practices must be confronted on the world stage.

Lammy also criticized Russia’s claims of standing with the Global South while undermining international norms. He accused the Kremlin of fostering a “mafia state,” built on corruption and the suppression of dissent.

The meeting, held on September 24, gathered world leaders to discuss the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Lammy reiterated the UK’s strong support for Ukraine and stressed that defending the UN Charter is crucial to maintaining global order.
