Lithuania Sounds Air Alert Over Suspected Drone Threat Near Vilnius

Lithuania issued an air alert over a possible drone threat near Vilnius on September 13, temporarily suspending flights at the country’s main international airport as authorities investigated the suspected aerial object.

According to Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT, a yellow-level air alert was issued at around 1:00 p.m. local time for Vilnius and the surrounding region, as well as the Trakai and Elektrėnai areas.

Flights at Vilnius Airport were temporarily suspended during the alert. The yellow warning indicated that there was no immediate danger, but residents were advised to identify the nearest shelter in case authorities raised the threat level to code red.

Lithuanian authorities later issued an all-clear, designated code white, allowing residents to leave safe locations and shelters.

“The Lithuanian Armed Forces inform: AIR ALERT IS OVER (WHITE). You may leave safe places or shelters,” authorities said in an emergency notification.

Officials later said NATO fighter jets investigated the radar contact and determined that the suspected drone was in fact a flock of birds.

The alert came on the same day a Russian drone strike hit the locomotive of a Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train in Ukraine’s Volyn region, approximately two kilometers from the Polish border.

The same Russian attack also struck infrastructure near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk international border crossing between Ukraine and Poland, temporarily disrupting operations there. No injuries were reported in the train strike.
