The UK imposes new sanctions on Russia's energy sector, including 20 vessels from its shadow fleet , according to a statement on the UK government's website on December 17.

Among the sanctioned vessels are Ocean Faye, Andaman Skies, and Mianzimu, each having carried over four million barrels of Russian oil in 2024.

The British sanctions will also target companies such as 2Rivers DMCC and 2Rivers PTE LTD.

“The UK has now sanctioned over 100 ships for transporting Russian energy, including 93 oil tankers, more than any other nation,“ the press release says.

The United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Finland, and Estonia have agreed to form a new partnership to counter suspected shadow fleet vessels along the Baltic route, the UK government website wrote.

“As Putin’s oil revenues continue to fuel the fires of his illegal war, Ukrainian families are enduring cold, dark nights, often without heating, light or electricity, targeted by Russia’s relentless missile attacks,“ said UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Previously, on November 7, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during a press conference that the Russian shadow fleet earns $11-12 billion a month.

The shadow fleet are vessels with obscure ownership structures meant to conceal their transportation of sanctioned Russian oil and wet cargo since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
