UK to Deliver 100 Air Defense Missiles in May, Urging ‘Ukraine Needs More Than “Warm Words”’
British Secretary of State for Defense Grant Shapps announced on May 18th that Ukraine will receive one hundred air defense missiles from Britain throughout the month of May. In a commentary published in The Sun newspaper, Shapps emphasized the urgent need for increased military assistance to Ukraine amidst Russia’s renewed offensive in the Kharkiv region.
The British Defense Secretary specifically called on Western allies to expedite their delivery of aid, stating that “warm words are not enough.” He stressed the importance of tangible support to ensure the Ukrainian Armed Forces have the necessary resources to repel Russia’s illegal invasion.
Since the beginning of May, the UK has already sent 80 air defense missiles to Ukraine, with an additional twenty scheduled to arrive before June. This contribution is part of the UK’s ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Shapps further underscored the UK’s dedication to Ukraine by highlighting the significant increase in military aid this year. He stated, “This government has been able to up our aid to Ukraine to £3 billion this year,” making it the largest military aid package provided to Ukraine by the UK to date.
