The United Kingdom will fund the production of air defense systems and long-range weaponry in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov on January 14.

Umerov made the announcement following his official visit to the UK, where he held talks with Defense Secretary John Healey.

“Developing Ukraine’s defense industry was a key focus [of the talks]. The UK has already invested in our weapons production, and this cooperation is ongoing. Specifically, funding will be directed toward manufacturing air defense systems and long-range weaponry,” Umerov stated.

“On behalf of our warriors, I sincerely thank the British people and Mr. John Healey for their leadership in supporting Ukraine,” he concluded.

In late 2024, the UK provided Ukraine with a $2.94 billion (£2.26 billion) loan to purchase necessary weapons. The UK Ministry of Defense noted that the loan was intended to support Ukraine’s military budget, allowing investment in essential equipment such as air defense systems, artillery, and technical support to aid its fight against Russia.

It remains unclear whether Umerov’s announcement refers to an agreement to use these funds for direct procurement from Ukraine’s defense industry or if it involves new financial assistance.

It was previously announced that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to visit Ukraine for the first time since taking office to discuss the potential involvement of British troops in a post-war peacekeeping mission.
