Ukraine and Japan Agree to Expand Cooperation After Defense Minister’s Meeting in Kyiv

Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, Denys Shmyhal, met with Japan’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Masashi Nakagome, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in several strategic areas. The talks were outlined in an official statement of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense published on August 19.
Shmyhal emphasized Ukraine’s openness to exchanging innovations and technologies aimed at saving lives and reinforcing peace.
He invited Japanese partners to take part in projects across key sectors, particularly in the rehabilitation of Ukrainian soldiers.

The minister also proposed Japanese support for one of the recovery centers where released servicemen of the Defense Forces are undergoing treatment.
Expressing gratitude for Tokyo’s consistent backing, Shmyhal stated: “Japan is a reliable partner, whose support is extremely tangible for our country.”
The discussion underscores Kyiv’s intent to broaden cooperation with Japan, which has already been providing assistance to Ukraine in humanitarian and reconstruction programs.
Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine offered Japan a drone technology partnership, proposing to share combat-tested experience and jointly produce drones for civilian and intelligence applications.
