Ukraine is closely monitoring developments in Iran and the mass protests there, describing them as reflecting the Iranian people’s desire for freedom, dignity, and a better future, according to a statement by Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 14.

The ministry stated it “firmly condemns” what it described as Iran’s authorities repressing their own people and an unprecedented rise in the number of people killed and injured among protest participants, calling it a gross violation of fundamental human rights and freedoms.

It said the use of violence and harsh methods to suppress protests undermined the principles of democracy and the rule of law.

Ukraine urged Iran’s authorities to abandon force, respect citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech, and meet what it described as the legitimate demands of its own people, saying violence against unarmed demonstrators must stop immediately.

It also renewed a call on the international community to increase political, diplomatic, and other pressure on Tehran in response to what it described as violence and oppression.

Protests in Iran erupted in late December 2025 and have since spread nationwide, with demonstrators voicing grievances that have expanded beyond economic issues as security forces moved to disperse crowds and authorities imposed communications restrictions.

The UN human rights office said it had received reports of hundreds of protesters killed, while casualty estimates have varied sharply, with activists cited by The Washington Post putting the death toll above 2,500.

Earlier, it was reported that Iran had disconnected from the global internet and began enforcing a government-approved national web, significantly restricting online access during domestic unrest.
