Ukraine Captures Chinese-Made Type 56-1 Rifle Used by Russian Forces Near Toretsk

Russian troops have begun deploying Chinese-made Type 56-1 assault rifles, according to Militarnyi on April 21. The weapon, a near-copy of the Soviet AKS, was reportedly captured by Ukrainian forces near Toretsk and examined in a review published by the YouTube channel “Vlad Kalina. About Weapons.”

The rifle, found in new condition and factory-lubricated, displays several design differences from its Soviet predecessor, including thicker components, a reengineered forend, and a milled receiver cover.
While the weapon maintains standard Soviet control mechanisms, its build quality appears inconsistent, with reports that the piston mechanism loosened after limited use. The rifle also retains automatic fire capability, ruling out modifications of a civilian version.
Military experts believe the rifle may have been issued to a mercenary affiliated with a Russian private military company, reflecting a pattern in which foreign-sourced arms enter Russian hands through third-party channels.
Ukrainian authorities have previously confirmed broader evidence of Chinese military support to Russia, including supplies of gunpowder and artillery, based on intelligence from the Security Service of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy enacted sanctions against three Chinese companies accused of supplying military-related materials to Russia, amid concerns over China’s support for Moscow’s war efforts.
