Ukraine Charges Russian Officer for Ordering Geran-2 Drone Strikes on Energy Infrastructure

Ukrainian prosecutors have formally notified the deputy commander of a Russian Armed Forces battalion of suspicion for issuing orders to conduct drone strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General via Telegram on January 19.

According to the statement, investigators established the officer’s involvement in authorizing attacks on energy and gas transportation facilities using Geran-2 unmanned aerial vehicles.

“Prosecutors have established facts of the deputy battalion commander of the Russian Armed Forces being complicit in issuing orders to strike energy and gas transportation infrastructure facilities using Geran-2 UAVs,” the Office of the Prosecutor General said.

Investigators say that in 2023–2024 the suspect, while stationed in the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea, acted in coordination with senior Russian military leadership and issued orders to deploy Geran-2 attack drones against predetermined targets.

The strikes were directed at designated energy and gas transportation infrastructure sites across Ukraine.

The suspect’s actions have been classified under Part 2 of Article 28 and Part 1 of Article 438 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, which concern the commission of war crimes by a group of persons.

The pretrial investigation is being conducted by the Main Investigative Department of the Security Service of Ukraine, with operational support from the SBU’s relevant specialized units.

Earlier, Ukrainain prosecutors sent to court a criminal case against three Russian military commanders accused of involvement in the deaths of 20 civilians in the city of Chernihiv.

The charges stem from events during the Russian blockade of Chernihiv in 2022. Investigators say that on the morning of March 16, 2022, Russian commanders ordered their units to shell civilian areas and infrastructure using Grad multiple-launch rocket systems.
