Ukraine Eliminates Shahed Drone Relay Stations Operating From Belarus

Ukraine has successfully eliminated relay stations for Shahed drones installed on Belarusian territory, which previously enabled Russian forces to conduct reconnaissance over Kyiv.
This was reported by Ukrainian Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and Ministry of Defense advisor Serhiy “Flash” Beskrestnov via Facebook on February 27.

“We managed to eliminate the Mesh network used by the Shaheds in the north, which had a positive impact on the defense capabilities of Kyiv and the central part of Ukraine,” Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated during the meeting with journalists.
Beskrestnov elaborated on the destruction of the guidance network, explaining that the Mesh network on the Shahed drones consists of radio modems that act as relays and communication amplifiers for one another, rather than simply receiving and transmitting signals.
“Under such a scheme, all Shaheds in the air are connected by radio to each other. As a result, several Shaheds can be shot down, and the connection will not be interrupted; it will simply pass through other Shaheds,” he added.
Despite this decentralized drone communication, the system requires “starting points” to link the control channel via the internet back to Russian operators. These access points are typically installed on 70 to 90-meter towers near the Ukrainian border, utilizing powerful directional antennas.

Beskrestnov noted that Ukrainian signals intelligence continuously monitors and detects the radio signals from these towers, allowing for precise geolocation.
“The fact that such points operated from the territory of Russia and the occupied territories surprised no one, but the operation of such points from the territory of Belarus turned out to be a surprise. Several such points were discovered in the Republic of Belarus, and they serviced Shaheds in various parts of our country,” Beskrestnov said.
Earlier, recent satellite imagery revealed that Russian forces are establishing a comprehensive air defense and electronic warfare network around the Krychaw military airfield in Belarus, significantly fortifying the probable deployment zone of the Oreshnik ballistic missile system.
